Malar augmentation using implants

Posted by Dr. Schoenfeld

Question: I worry about putting a permanent implant into my body, but really want cheek implants. Is there any research out there on malar augmentation using implants? I don’t want to have problems in ten or fifteen years.

Answer: There is a great deal of research and information available with regards to the long term safety of cheek implants used in cheek augmentation.  The materials that are currently in use for cheek implants, silastic, medpor, gortex, are all extremely safe and well tolerated by the body.  I have only heard of rejection of the implants following direct trauma to the cheek where the implants have been placed years before.
