Question:
I’m African American and considering rhinoplasty. Are there any risks that I should be aware of that are specific to African American patients?
Answer:
The surgical risks that ethnic rhinoplasty patients have to consider is with regards to the increased potential for scarring in darker skin tones. Fortunately, I have extensive experience in ethnic rhinoplasty and have not seen an increased incidence of scarring compared to those patients with lighter skin tones. There are, however, several surgical steps which will likely need to be performed in an ethnic rhinoplasty procedure in order to create an esthetically pleasing and well balanced nose. It is important that your surgeon have extensive experience in ethnic rhinoplasty to provide you with the greatest potential for a good surgical outcome and the least potential for post operative complications.
