A fat neck can be a source of frustration. Whether it’s genetic or the result of too many years spent overweight, excess fat around the neck is not a feature most people want to keep. When given the chance to reshape and slenderize their thick necks, most patients jump at the opportunity. If you have a thick or fat neck, would you consider a plastic surgery to improve this highly visible area of the body? Neck contouring is a very real possibility thanks to two procedures: the neck lift and SlimLipo, an advanced type of liposuction.
What Is a Neck Lift?
Neck lift surgery was designed in order to improve the appearance of sagging skin of the neck and jawline. During this procedure the excess skin and fat that can enhance the appearance of a fat or thick neck will be removed, leaving behind a more slender contour to the neck itself. Aging can increase the perceived thickness of the neck, as the skin loses elasticity and then sags downward from the face and jaw. Many prospective patients are frustrated with the formation of “jowls” along the jawline, which can only make a naturally thick neck become more noticeable.
Other aging symptoms that can be addressed by a neck lift procedure include neck banding, where the separate ligaments become stringy and distinct, excess fleshiness of the neck, and the unwanted “turkey waddle” that forms below the chin. With a neck that is too thick or fat, any of these aging issues is magnified to a frustrating degree. By addressing these concerns and allowing a plastic surgeon to reverse aging signs and improve the contour of the neck, you can make positive changes for your overall look and youthful appearance.
The neck lift procedure begins with incisions placed underneath the chin and optionally behind the ears as well. An endoscopic neck lift will use smaller incisions. Once these are placed, the surgeon is able to work on tightening the muscles of the neck before trimming and lifting the skin. A compression bandage will be placed on the neck and worn for several weeks following your procedure, while prescription pain medication can be used to manage any discomfort. Patients may also experience swelling and bruising, as well as temporary numbness to the area. Your stitches will be removed between seven and 10 days; you will be able to return to work between 10 and 14 days following your procedure, to allow ample time for healing.
What Is SlimLipo for the Neck?
SlimLipo is a revolutionary approach to traditional liposuction, a fat removal procedure that has been popular for decades. This alternative body sculpting procedure is a safer and more effective way to remove fat cells from various parts of the body, including the delicate area of the neck and face. When unwanted fat cells are building up in your neck, diet and exercise aren’t enough to make a noticeable difference. To make permanent changes to the neck, a technique like SlimLipo may be your best option, especially since it is an ideal treatment for this smaller area of the body. It can remove fat cells once and for all, leaving your neck slimmer and with an improved contour.
The SlimLipo procedure begins with incisions made strategically along the treatment area, through which the surgeon can insert a cannula fitted with the SlimLipo laser device. SlimLipo uses two different wavelengths of laser light, allowing for better targeting of fat, greater amounts of fat removal, and quicker recovery time. Once inserted, the laser liquefies and removes the unwanted fat cells, while also producing a skin-tightening effect to ensure no loose skin is left behind.
Recovering from SlimLipo takes about one to two weeks, during which time you will be advised to stay home and rest, avoiding most activities until you have healed. You will be given pain medication to manage any discomfort and a compression garment that should be worn for the first week, although you should be careful to follow your surgeon’s advice exactly. SlimLipo at the neck can do much to lessen the thickness of your neck without a lengthy amount of downtime or side effects.
