Question:
Last year I broke my nose, and recently I have been contemplating rhinoplasty. My main concern is caring for my nose after the surgery. What lifestyle changes should be made in order for my nose to completely heal?
Answer:
If you have broken your nose and your nose is still crooked then I would suggest having your nose repaired. Having a rhinoplasty performed at the same time as you are having your nose fixed from its previous fracture is a good idea and possibly opportunistic if you have already contemplated having a rhinoplasty. Following rhinoplasty surgery you will need to refrain from heavy exercise for about 3 weeks. I tell my patients that walking is encouraged the first week following surgery but heavy exercise can lead to prolonged swelling of the nose if it is too soon after your surgery. I ask that my patients not participate in any activity that could lead to nasal injury for about 6 weeks after surgery. I encourage my patients to use sun screen to avoid burns. Finally, I tell my patients that if you are concerned with your appearance then returning to work will not be an issue after about 10 days following surgery. If you are not particularly concerned with the appearance of your nose then one week after surgery will be fine.
