Question:
I am a woman in my late fifties interested in cheek augmentation. I understand that the procedure is done either with an implant or with the patient’s own fat cells. Is either method superior to the other, and how would you determine which is best for me?
Answer:
Cheek augmentation is a much debated topic. I have experience in fat injection for cheek augmentation, cheek implant placement, and more recently, dermal fillers such as Perlane for cheek augmentation. I used more cheek implants for augmentation in the past and still use them occasionally. However, I favor the use of fat injection and dermal fillers. I have found these procedures provide excellent results for cheek augmentation with minimal if any downtime, and low risks. I feel that the cheek augmentation appears more natural with the use of fat and dermal fillers, and I have more control in sculpting the appearance of the cheek with injections than I do with implants.
