Question:
I heard that laser skin resurfacing has made dermabrasion somewhat obsolete. Is this true? Is dermabrasion still good for treating some things?
Answer:
Laser resurfacing has largely replaced dermabrasion in my practice. I use laser resurfacing for acne scarring, skin pigmentation issues, deep and superficial wrinkles, and scar revision. Each of these indications was previously treated with dermabrasion but, lasers have become extremely specific in terms of the depth of treatment. This has decreased the side effects associated with laser resurfacing. Fractional laser technology has taken this safety issue even a step further.
