Question:
Our 14 year old son wants to have otoplasty surgery. He plays hockey so I’m wondering how long he will have to wait post-op before he is able to safely play the sport again, and wear his helmet. What is your opinion?
Answer:
I also have a 14 year old son who is a hockey and lacrosse player. As you are aware, these sports require the use of helmets and otoplasty surgery requires that the ears not be disturbed following surgical repair. I would suggest waiting about six weeks prior to undertaking hockey following the otoplasty procedure to insure that the ears have healed appropriately and no damage will be done if the ears are manipulated.
